Week 3 Update

Week 3 of 2016 begins today and I’m somewhere near where I want to be with my writing. I’m at 79,000 words for January (and the year), averaging 3,700 words per day for the month, and am wrapping up quite a few projects I’ve been working on for a long time (a few for years). I will hit about 117,000 words for the month at my current pace.

With this being the last full week of the month, my goals are to finish Hungry Gods 3 (at least by the 31st), finish editing 2 books (one of which is Apocalypse Witch 3), and write 1 more short story. Then I can cross January off and start thinking about February.

I will try to release Apocalypse Witch 3 this week. 🙂

On a final note, with Spilling Blood ep. 11 released this week, I have begun writing Spilling Blood ep. 12.

Yesterday I worked on Hungry Gods 3, started my second short story for the month, finished the first draft of Apocalypse Witch 3, and did a little editing. I have now passed the 75k mark for the month. I’m now writing more than 25k a week. Last week I set a goal for myself to reach an average of writing 4k a day, and I’m not there yet, but I’m going to be pretty close by this weekend.

My computer didn’t crash yesterday, so I’m happy about that. Hopefully it’s got that out of its system. And I watched the first episode of Orphan Black Season 3. Oh, I drank loads of coffee. True story.

EDITING

So I see a big challenge arising because of my output. I need to make real time for editing. I don’t know how much time I realistically need to set aside for this task to get books released in a timely manner. In the past, the answer was give all the time, until the book was complete. That doesn’t work for me now.

So to start, I’m going to go at an hour at a time, and see how many words I get through. I’ll start a new spreadsheet to track this, and it’ll be more data for this page. This will give me an idea of how long it’s going to take before the book sees the light of day.

Note to self – this is something I should do with marketing too.

Yes! That’s a new title for Daily Word Count you see up there. Because, word count, right? But Writer’s Life… that sounds adventurous.

And it could be! Sometimes! Because, writers!

And yesterday was no exception. I had an antagonist enter the story of my life. I totally didn’t expect it. It was my computer. It froze up on me three times, and once I lost a few hundred words in Hungry Gods. Of course, I’m blaming the Windows update from Microsoft that happened the night before. Microsoft is the Big Bad of this story, and the PC like maybe a Level Boss, or even an anti-hero (since we’re usually friends – but that’s how it usually works with antagonists, the ones who love you the most are deal out the most hurt). There’s no resolution yet. It’s like an obscure indie film leaving the audience wondering if this glimpse into the protagonist’s life is just there to leave us wondering if it’s a profound statement about life and inevitability.

And while my PC sabotaged much of my productivity, I did manage to release Spilling Blood ep 11 (there will be an official announcement later), as well as plan for a Spilling Blood series sale starting in a couple days, PLUS! Word count.

So yesterday’s writing kept me completely in the world of Hungry Gods. It is ~69% complete. I fell beneath my minimum daily writing goal of 2,750 words, because… you know… PC issues.

I started yesterday off finishing the editing of Spilling Blood and got it out to my proofreaders, followed by writing over 5,500 words. I’ve already got feedback on SB11 and will upload the book today (yay!). Now my focus is on Apocalypse Witch 3. The rough draft *may* be finished today, I’m hopeful. It’s going to be a bit longer than the original 20k goal.

I will start three other projects this week, one being another short story and Spilling Blood ep. 12, preferably as soon as I type “The End” of Apocalypse Witch.

Yesterday goes down as a productive day with almost 6800 words written. My only goal for the day I failed to finish was editing Spilling Blood ep. 11, so that’s high up on today’s list. I also finished a 20k word story, which goes onto the editing pile today too. Other goals – back to Apocalypse Witch 3, and if I have time I’ll begin a short story.

I did something a bit different yesterday. Nothing big, I just wrote for an entire 30 minutes at a time instead of 25 minutes. That extra 5 minutes made sure I (mostly) hit 1k words within the writing stretch. There have still been days where I’ve hit 2k words an hour, but on average I don’t. So anyway, I might keep right at 30 minute bursts this week.

Milestone Day: Passed the 50k mark for the month.

I have another book moving to completion this weekend. Though today I won’t have much time to write, Sunday and Monday are both completely open.

How to Write 100k Words in a Month

It’s the start of Week 3 of 2016 and as far as my writing goes, it’s better than ever. I’ve hit 49,600 words for the month so far, just short of 400 words for that 50k NaNoWriMO comparison, so I’ve hit a point where I could have written something novel length in only 2 weeks. I’m splitting my time between multiple titles of various lengths. I do intend to have one full length novel completed (1st draft only) by the 31st.

100k Words in a 31 days requires: ~3,226 words a day, every day. If you do that for a year, you’ve written 1,200,000 words.

So how do you plan for success, to hit 100k words in a single month? Here is how I’m doing it.

My three factors are: Writing Speed, Writing Time, and Planning.

200 (5)

Writing Speed

On several of my writing days, I easily achieved writing speeds of over 2k words per hour. On other days, I was into some sticky scenes requiring more thought, and I dropped down to 1500 words per hour. Overall I averaged 1,790 words per hour. If I were only focusing on a novel in a month, I would know that I would only have to dedicate 1 hour a day to completing it.

To maintain a decent speed, I know ahead of time what scenes I am writing and what needs to happen. I am also driven by my timer to do nothing but focus on writing for 25 minute bursts, so I do my best to stay in the zone and let the words spill out to tell the story.

What to do: Find your writing speed. Write solidly for a length of time (again, I do 25 minute bursts) and figure out how many words you are actually writing per hour. That will be important to decide how much time you need to set aside every day to write.

Writing Time

More than speed, writing time has been the most influential factor to word count so far. I’ve had days where I’ve only gotten in half an hour, but on free days (i.e. not needing to spend my day anywhere else) I shoot for two to three hours of writing. At my current writing speed, that amounts to 3500 to 5300 words in a day, which is right in line for achieving at least 100k for the month. What a great motivator to write! Think of what you can do with that as a writer! 1-2 novels, 5 20k novellas (perfect for serials), 10 10k short stories (serials! Hell yeah!), and for you short-short story writers, a freaking potential of 20 5k length stories. I’m doing a little bit of all of it.

What to do: Take your writing speed and multiply it by the number of days in the month to see what you will accomplish. If you aren’t going to write every day, take that into account. Knowing what you can accomplish if you make the time is a great motivator to getting started on those days you don’t want to. But we’re chasing 100k words, right? You need to average that 3,200 words a day. How long is that going to take you?

Planning

I put planning last, though you need to know your projects before you even start. I have it last because my Writing Speed and Time decide what I’m going to accomplish for the month. Planning also takes into account your goals. I use loose outlines that track my scenes. I have a list of projects I want to release within a certain time frame, plus lots of other projects I’ve started that I’d eventually like to get back to.

With the word count I know I can achieve at my current speed and the time I make to accomplish it (let’s say I know I will hit 100k for the month) I can choose which of my projects I want to apply those words to. In my example, I want Hungry Gods 3 written and I want Spilling Blood 11 complete. For these books, I set aside 65k words for the desired lengths of those titles. I have 35k worth of words left over. Since I also sometimes write under pen names (romance stuff that has nothing to do with G.S. Wright’s chosen genres), I choose to give them a bit of a writing push too. I would probably otherwise ignore my pen names in a month like this because of my focus, but I know the words are there, so it’s either use them or lose them.

What to do: Take a look at how many words you think you will write, what you’re going to write for the month. This will help you maintain the momentum after you finish a project.

Even if you aren’t going to chase after 100k, using the above can at least give you an idea of what your potential is. So what do you think? What word count and projects are you chasing? Leave a comment below. 🙂

Here I am, on the last day of week 2 of 2016, and so far I’v managed to get myself to my chair and write at least 1000 words a day. If you are following me, you probably have heard I’m pushing for at least 2,700 words a day, to hit the 1 million mark, or even better, 5,500 words a day for that lofty 2 million end of year word count. I’m currently sitting quite comfortably between both goals at 3,400 words a day. This is done by balancing out my low writing days with 6,000+ ones.

Writing has been my main focus over everything else, which means my editing is going slowly. Spilling Blood 11 is slowly going through the second draft/editing, and I am struggling with dividing my attention between pen names. I have to remind myself to look at the big picture, that 65,000 words of this month will be G.S. Wright titles, and 30,000 words will be pen names.

Is that nuts? 65,000 words. That’s more than I’ve ever written in a single month. And there’s another 30k going out under other names. My average will currently shoot me past the 95k by about an additional 10k. January’s looking good.

Tomorrow I can look at this better after I accomplish today’s writing. I am having thoughts of stretching out the Hungry Gods series into four novels instead of a trilogy. I’m about half way through a target 50k novel, and there’s still a lot of story to cover.
