How Many Hours Do You Write as a Full-Time Writer?

200 (3)Are you a full time or part time writer? If you are tracking your daily word counts, you might have this answer already.

Since I am tracking my average writing speed along with my word count, I can look back and see every 30 minute writing block I do and add them up.

So… am I full time?

Not even close. My first week of 2016, with my 26,000 words, I put in 16 hours of writing. Only 16. Granted, this does not take into consideration marketing, research, and editing – strictly writing. However, adding in those other factors would not be difficult, if I could look past any time wasted.

If we are on the clock for someone else, its easy. You sit in the office for 8 hours, right? Writing is probably close to that. You stop what you’re doing to to talk to your coworkers (spouse, children), you take phone calls, bathroom breaks, lunch, etc. Even working for someone else isn’t just sitting and focusing on one single task (probably). If I worked 40 hours as a writer last week, I spent 24 hours doing other stuff.

But let’s dream for a second…  What if you gave 40 hours to writing in a week? I averaged 1628 words an hour for the week. Multiply that by 40… 65,120 words for the week. How long of stories do you tell? That’s bigger than a NaNoWriMo novel. That’s 3 20k stories. That’s 13 5k short stories.

Maybe next week I’ll revisit this and actually track time spent in chair only doing author-related work.

Yesterday goes down as a productive day, the best one so far for the year. My two focuses right now are editing Spilling Blood episode 11, and finishing one of my books under a pen name. Here’s my numbers for yesterday.

Finding Time to Write

coldSometimes it’s hard to find time to write. Sometimes though, it’s not a matter of finding time to write, but restructuring how you spend the time you do have.

What are your distractions? For me, I like to read through articles on writing (the stuff I share all over Twitter), check my email for anything good, and scroll through Facebook and Twitter. Managing the amount of time I spend reading on the internet is my first step to getting more writing in. I need a solid two hours of writing to hit my goals. If I know I only have three hours before my day starts, I have to remind myself that I can read articles tomorrow. Plus, there’s always time to check out social media – watching tv, in the bathroom, while pretending to listen to someone’s conversation…. etc…)

Determine Your Time to Write. For me, the best time to write is in the mornings, because my family doesn’t get up as early as I do. That usually gets me a few hours of focus. Sometimes I’ll push to get up as early as 4:30, which usually turns into 5 or later, but I try. 🙂 Writing at night works too, but this is time I try to reserve for spending time with my family.

Steal Time to Write. I admit, this is my hardest thing to do. I would like to chunk out extra words throughout the day, but I rarely do. To be successful at this, you either have to find time to sneak away to your computer, or make use of other tools such as :

  • Get a tablet with a keyboard. Quick to set up, use almost anywhere.
  • Same for laptops, though I made the mistake of getting a large one, so I tend not to take it with me everywhere.
  • Voice dictation into your  phone (not fond of this, but it’s an option). I may one day look into getting a handheld voice recorder to use with Dragon Naturally Speaking, because I’ve heard a lot of people have success with it. And I often do a lot of driving by myself during the week.
  • Use something like an Alphasmart. That’s a really old keyboard with memory that stores writing. No distractions at all. The only problem with mine is you have to type hard, and there’s a lot of spelling errors because of it.  However, I wrote all of Spilling Blood Season 1 on it.

Yesterday was another rough day for writing, but I knew it would be. Got in 30 minutes and moved the story line along on Hungry Gods 3. Really, as long as I get in some writing, it’s a good day, right?

Today I’ve got some time to make a difference, so I plan on finishing the first draft of Spilling Blood episode 11.

The Value of Word Count

If you’ve been following my blog for the past week, you’ll notice I’ve been sharing my daily word counts. A lot of us writers do so just to keep track of how much we wrote in a year. If you have ever participated in NaNoWriMo, you’ve probably stared at your graph showing you how many more words you needed to write to finish a 50k novel in a month.

Also I’ve seen it said that by your first million words you’ll find your voice. I don’t remember who said that or how they said it, but it referred to that 10,000 hours of practice at whatever you pursue to become good at it. You won’t know when you’ve reached that milestone without tracking word count.

Word count is a measure of how long it will take you to complete your projects. Since I started independently publishing my writing in 2012, I’ve got plenty of unfinished manuscripts on my laptop. I’ve got the projects I want to finish this month, and those I’d like to get to later in the year. The ones I’m chasing now stand in the way of all of my other ideas. I see them as what I’ve committed to, but I really really want to start chasing my newer ones too. :/

Dean Wesley Smith wrote a blog article called Pulp Speed. It’s an inspirational article where he talks about increasing his own writing, and sets milestones, called Pulp Speeds, that show what he will accomplish if he writes so many words per day. He shoots for Pulp Speed 6, which would net him 2 million words of writing in a single year. Pulp Speed 1, his lowest, is an impressive 1 million words in a year.

Based on his article, I am at Pulp Speed Two, and on the cusp of reaching Three. I actually tie his article into my excel spreadsheet where I track my word count. I want to reach Pulp Speed 6. He gives examples of how many hours you’d have to write a day if you write 1000 words an hour, and there lies also the value of tracking your word count… pushing to get faster.

I am currently using a timer, and writing in 25 minute bursts. Often I get in only 750 words in that time, averaging about 1500 words an hour. I am pushing toward 2000 an hour. At that speed, I’m happy with the amount of time I spend in a day writing.

So! With all of that said, I take my daily word count and chart what I’m going to do with it based upon my average, to decide what I want/need to accomplish for the month. Pulp Speed 2 gives me 95,000 words to play with this month. 50k of that I’m giving to Hungry Gods 3. 20k is going to one of my pen names, Spilling Blood Episode 11 gets 15k, and then I’m going for 2 short stories of 5 k each. This is the start of week two of January, and I have one short story out of the way, and Spilling Blood ep. 11 almost complete.

That has netted me almost 26,000 words in one week.

That normally would be a fairly full month. But once I start looking at my productivity for the higher Pulp Speeds, it pushes me to add that extra 600 words a day to Reach the next level. I would love to hit 6k a day. We’ll see.

One thing I would like to note is that I cannot apply an entire day to just one project. I find that tiring. I have to spread my writing out at least between two of my books, and often three. That surprisingly helps my mind stay focused on writing, and still meets the same monthly writing goals as though tackling them one by one.

This post is longer than  I anticipated, so to wrap it up, here’s my stats so far:

Word Counts

1/7/16 Word Count: 3,190 (ave. 2,004 wph)

Hungry Gods 3 +1,845. 17,425/60,000

The Last Day of the First Week of 2016!!!

Excuse me a second, I’m going to change the way I’ve been writing these posts. *shuffle* Okay, welcome back.

I spent time knocking out words yesterday and had my second best day so far of this week, at over 5500 words. I  finished a short story (Which I’ll edit AND publish today), and made killer progress on Spilling Blood Episode 11. I really don’t lead a very exciting life. Aside from writing, I played with my youngest child and participated in conversations about Hump Day on Facebook.

Hungry Gods 3 is coming along nicely. Now that I’ve passed the 10k mark, I’m writing about Lysa. I’m sure you’re following the Hungry Gods books, right? And I know you’re dying (DYING!!!!) to find out what happened after the events at the end of Death’s Reach.

Today marks the end of the first week of  2016. I’ve already written over 22,000 words for the week, which is a sizable dent in any writing month. I have more thoughts on this, but I’ll share them tomorrow, because I can actually step back and see what the data is telling me (better than today, because there’s still plenty of time to sabotage that last mile).

Tomorrow, recorded here as a note to myself, I’ll talk about inspiration for hitting certain word counts and what I see myself accomplishing for January based on my productivity.

Here’s yesterday’s writing numbers:

Word Counts

1/6/16 Word Count: 5,548 (ave. 1,585 wph)

Yesterday’s writing was okay. Funny to call a day with a productivity of over 4k words an okay day, but that is where it falls with my current writing speed. I’m starting to pick up on burning out the little windows of distraction, of what I use to keep from writing. One necessary evil is reading articles on writing. I consider it research, and for those of you who also follow me on Twitter, you know I share a lot of them. The second one is still social media. The only real cure for that one is by limiting my time there, and its funny how you can blink and an hour’s gone by when you’re scrolling through your facebook feed.

I also think I’m going to reconsider the order in which I’m writing to get some of my projects knocked out, instead of giving 4 titles roughly equal treatment. I am thinking I want to have a minimum of 3 hours of writing a day, which is a little bit under 6k words a day, and anything above and beyond is a bonus. I am seeing Spilling Blood 11 nearing completion this week (and I think the cover is ready), plus a short story I’m writing under another pen name. Apocalypse Witch may get some much needed love after Spilling Blood this week. Who knows? 🙂

I had a great day writing yesterday, dedicating a solid 3 1/2 hours to my books. I’m using a round robin method combined with a pomodoro timer to keep myself interested, so the day doesn’t go to one single title. While this might slow down getting any single one book completed, it moves numerous titles toward completion at a fairly decent rate. I would also argue that because I am BIC, it’s not slowing anything down. What’s the alternative? Writing a thousand words and deciding I’ve written enough for the day? As you can see by my numbers from yesterday, what I’m doing works for me. So far. 🙂

The week is looking promising. I’m already at 11,534 words, and that’s in only three days. Using the pomodoro technique (using a timer for 25 minute writing bursts), I’m averaging 1500 words an hour, although yesterday alone, my writing average hit 1700 words. I am thinking about going up to a full 30 minutes and see if the extra five minutes will take me to 2k words an hour. Maybe next week. 🙂

Monday Update #3

52 Books in 52 Weeks – Week 3

tumblr_mpa1vstnbl1rb324eo1_500I am writing/releasing 52 books in 52 weeks. Week two is over. Week 2: 1 book written. I finished Soul Sister on Friday. I’m making a few changes for the second draft. It will go through my proofreaders one more time (hopefully) and it’ll be released (again, hopefully) this week. I’m very excited to share it with you. It’s my favorite story from my muse so far. Words Written Last Week: 11,882. Average: 2,376 a day across 5 days. All of my time went to finishing Soul Sister. Week 2 of 52: 3 written, 2 published.

This Week’s Projects

  1. Get Soul Sister polished and beautiful and released.
  2. Finish Apocalypse Witch Book 3.
  3. Spilling Blood Season 2 needs a paperback edition… STILL!!!

BONUS!

This isn’t really a bonus, but a reminder. Did you know you can still read Death Storm (Hungry Gods Book 1) for FREE? I’m just throwing that out there because you’ll be seeing Book 3 in about two months and that will give you time to read the first two books with very little wait for the conclusion. You can find Death Storm at any of your favorite ebook distributors. It’s everywhere, seriously. cover-teaser

The 2015 Monday Update – Goals for This Year (or Better Late Than Never?!)

Yes, I know, we’re well into 2015. Through the winter (and the first part of the year, I didn’t have that much time to devote to my writing. Sooo… here we are, mid-April, and I’m just getting around to what is going on for the rest of the year.

Last year I had set a goal of writing 1 million words. I managed about a quarter of that. Though I’d like to think I could hit it this year, I don’t think a million words is what I want to focus on this time around.200 (2)

Instead, I’m going for 52 ebook releases in 52 weeks. Some of you might’ve seen a similar goal inspired by the writer Dean Wesley Smith in one of his blog posts from a few years back, and yes, I admit that it’s my influence.

But, I hear you say, it’s April! 15 weeks have already gone by, and you’ve only released 4 ebooks this year! Well, I just so happen to have 15 books on Amazon right now! That’s still 52 books by the time this year ends. But still, that’s not exactly the goal. 52 books in 52 weeks. I’ll take this goal into April 2016 to see it through.

So… back to what I’m shooting for. At least one ebook a week. This will include short stories, novelettes, novellas, serials, bundles, and full length novels. I’m going to try for at least one release per month to be a novel of 40k words or more, but that’s a secondary goal.

This week you’ll see the release of the conclusion to Spilling Blood Season II, and the complete Season in a single bundle (for those of you who have been waiting). In the following weeks, Apocalypse Witch 3 and the bundle of the trilogy, and Soul Sister (which is coming along quickly now), and finally on to Hungry Gods 3. I have several other secret projects I’m not ready to announce yet, but the above are what I’m already committed to.

Finally, if I can stay on track, I’ll go back to fairly regular Monday updates to keep myself honest.
