It will go through my proofreaders one more time (hopefully) and it’ll be released (again, hopefully) this week. I’m very excited to share it with you. It’s my favorite story from my muse so far. Words Written Last Week: 11,882. Average: 2,376 a day across 5 days. All of my time went to finishing Soul Sister. Week 2 of 52: 3 written, 2 published.

This Week’s Projects

  1. Get Soul Sister polished and beautiful and released.
  2. Finish Apocalypse Witch Book 3.
  3. Spilling Blood Season 2 needs a paperback edition… STILL!!!

BONUS!

This isn’t really a bonus, but a reminder. Did you know you can still read Death Storm (Hungry Gods Book 1) for FREE? I’m just throwing that out there because you’ll be seeing Book 3 in about two months and that will give you time to read the first two books with very little wait for the conclusion. You can find Death Storm at any of your favorite ebook distributors. It’s everywhere, seriously. cover-teaser

Words written last week: 8,938. Averaged 1,788 words a day (across 5 days, I rarely write on the weekends). Most of my time was spent editing and revising Spilling Blood 10, and the Season II collection.

This Week’s Projects

All attention is going to finishing Soul Sister. As it currently stands I am at 34,531 of 50,000 words. The final word count is not fixed, and may well go over.

If I get a chance to work on a second project, I’ll move on to the third book of the Apocalypse Witch series.

Also, I still have a long way to go to finish the paperback of Spilling Blood Season II, which I’d like to finish this week and get submitted to Createspace.

BONUS!

Guess what? Broken Things is on sale this week! Grab it for $0.99 on Amazon for your kindle reader. You’re welcome.

The 2015 Monday Update – Goals for This Year (or Better Late Than Never?!)

Yes, I know, we’re well into 2015. Through the winter (and the first part of the year, I didn’t have that much time to devote to my writing. Sooo… here we are, mid-April, and I’m just getting around to what is going on for the rest of the year.

Last year I had set a goal of writing 1 million words. I managed about a quarter of that. Though I’d like to think I could hit it this year, I don’t think a million words is what I want to focus on this time around.200 (2)

Instead, I’m going for 52 ebook releases in 52 weeks. Some of you might’ve seen a similar goal inspired by the writer Dean Wesley Smith in one of his blog posts from a few years back, and yes, I admit that it’s my influence.

But, I hear you say, it’s April! 15 weeks have already gone by, and you’ve only released 4 ebooks this year! Well, I just so happen to have 15 books on Amazon right now! That’s still 52 books by the time this year ends. But still, that’s not exactly the goal. 52 books in 52 weeks. I’ll take this goal into April 2016 to see it through.

So… back to what I’m shooting for. At least one ebook a week. This will include short stories, novelettes, novellas, serials, bundles, and full length novels. I’m going to try for at least one release per month to be a novel of 40k words or more, but that’s a secondary goal.

This week you’ll see the release of the conclusion to Spilling Blood Season II, and the complete Season in a single bundle (for those of you who have been waiting). In the following weeks, Apocalypse Witch 3 and the bundle of the trilogy, and Soul Sister (which is coming along quickly now), and finally on to Hungry Gods 3. I have several other secret projects I’m not ready to announce yet, but the above are what I’m already committed to.

Finally, if I can stay on track, I’ll go back to fairly regular Monday updates to keep myself honest.

Remembering Vampires as Monsters

3dad7d7995f7f62ada6b1309f6ff5fffWhen I was growing up in the eighties, vampires were scary.

Can you relate? At one time, vampires were monsters, undead that existed only to drink your blood. They were soulless killers existing in the dark, maybe standing outside the window watching as you prepared for bed, ignorant to their presence. Maybe the monsters needed invited in, maybe they didn’t.

To become a vampire meant to give up your soul, to hunger night after night, to kill your loved ones and not care. Maybe you’d be something mindless, driven by bloodlust, or maybe a tiny part of you would still exist, knowing what you had become yet victim of a personality shift. I picture Lucy from Dracula, the monstrous bride, or Michael from Lost Boys, fighting his urge for blood. Good stuff.

And for me, that made vampires scary.

And then something happened.

It has always been there, our society’s efforts to humanize our monsters. As a kid, I didn’t see it at first. Yet finding something frightening also meant it fascinated me.

It’s hard not to be jaded by vampires. It’s hard to fear something that eventually becomes so romanticized that the metaphors are portrayed literally. For those of us still searching for vampire horror, sometimes you have to block out the mainstream. It’s still there, in the dark, waiting. Vampires can still be monsters.

This post is sponsored by my vampire serial, Spilling Blood. It is a blending of what I like about vampires and what I found scary. They can get in your head. They are supernaturally fast. They have no remorse.

spillingbloodcover-s1-low-rSeason I of Spilling Blood is available now. Season II begins Monday, August 25th.

The Return of the Elusive Monday Update

It’s been a very long time since I’ve done a Monday update. At one time I intended to post my weekly word count on my works in process, along with how many words I’d written for the year.

2ZEqehG9T6G14lzYgIiH_Horse Laptop

I failed…

To be honest, I have been distracted for the last few months by other projects. I think it’s time to return to my books.

WIP’s

Currently I am working on my three series and one stand-alone novel.

 HUNGRY GODS BOOK 3

Out of my three series, this one is the most complicated. If you read Death Storm & the sequel, Death’s Reach, there are many, many story-lines that must be brought to the conclusion. I had originally hoped to get it done by the end of this summer, but I have constantly let myself get distracted with other projects. My current goal for this book is by the end of the year. I am setting the goal of a 50,000 word book, though I expect it to surpass that length.

Hungry Gods III Word Count: 1,335/50,000

 SPILLING BLOOD SEASON II

Last year around October I released Spilling Blood, Season I. I put out one episode a week for four weeks, releasing the collection around Halloween. This year, I’m going to release the new episodes as I can. I’m not going to keep to a weekly schedule as life’s schedule is interfering. However, it will be longer, with two additional episodes. Season II will encompass episodes 5 through 10, with each episode of the serial around 10,000 words.

Here’s a teaser of the cover:

spillingbloodcover2

Spilling Blood Season II, episode 5 Word Count: 1,665/10,ooo

 APOCALYPSE WITCH BOOK 3

I started this series a few months ago, with the idea of writing them quickly. That didn’t happen. Book 3 has not gotten the attention it needs. Each book of the Apocalypse Witch serial will continue around 20,000 words.

Apocalypse Witch Book 3 Word Count: 486/20,000

 SOUL SISTER

This is a stand-alone novel and is nearing completion. If you liked Broken Things and haven’t really gotten into my genre writing, you’ll probably like SOUL SISTER. You’ll be hearing more about this book in the very near future.

Check out the cover:

Soul Sister word Count: 29,915/50,000

 ONE MILLION WORDS IN 2014

Argh. What can I say? I am nowhere near meeting this writing goal. If you recall, my purpose was to write 1 million words over the course of this year. I am currently at 201,669 words, only about 20% of the way there and with just over four months to make up the difference. I might redo this goal for 2015, but I’m not giving up on it until midnight nears on December 31st.

1 Million Words Goal: 201,669/1,000,000

With a little luck and motivation, I’ll have a new Monday update next week, with impressive word counts.

10 Tips on Writing – and Writing More

NUMBER 10 – Write in Bursts

One of the biggest keys to being a productive writer is to make time to write. If you want to be really efficient, set aside blocks of time to write. Most of us (according to all of the productivity articles on the Lifehacker website) have trouble being efficient for longer than 60 to 90 minutes at a time.

Knowing this is a writer’s kryptonite, grab your timer and set it for 60 to 90 minutes, whatever is the longest you can achieve. Don’t go longer than that, the mind gets fatigued. Take at least a 20 minute break if you want to keep going.

The other important factor is isolation. Make sure you’ve got your research out of the way. Stay away from Social Media as long as that timer is going. Even one burst with a timer will very likely get you 2000 words for the day on the first pass.

NUMBER 9 – Track Your Word Count

Every day, get your word count put into a spreadsheet and track your productivity. You will also be able to see if your writing is getting faster. It will also help you to know if you are meeting your personal goals.

 NUMBER 8 – Take Breaks

This goes along with number 10. Take breaks. Give your mind a chance to recover. When you walk away from your work, you might find inspiration and discover new things to throw at your protagonist. It doesn’t matter what you do with your time, and if you are like me, you’ll keep thinking about the book anyway. Go outside, take a shower, go for a walk. Give your mind a break from the writing and let it dream again.

NUMBER 7 – Write Where You can Be Alone

Okay, I know some of you like to work in coffee bars or around the public. I, however, find it better to work someplace where I can let my work affect me. I am sensitive to the emotions within my writing, and I don’t want others staring at the stupid faces I’m making while writing. If I have to block out my emotions because I’m writing around others, I’ll probably block out being able to properly express those emotions in my book. I don’t like to be disturbed.

NUMBER 6 – Put Emotion in Your Book

Do you want people to remember your book? Put emotion in it. Fill it with feels. Loss, Pain, Love, Angst, Fear, Hope. Lay it on thick. Who cares about your conflict if the reader can’t feel it too?

 NUMBER 5 – No Worries

Want to never finish your book? Worry about what the reader will think of the book, or worse, you (!), before you’ve ever finished it. You are not your art. Create it and let it stand on its own.

If you really don’t want to worry about what others think, hurry up and write another book. It’s easy to be married to one book. If you write multiple titles, you’re not tied to the likes and hates of that single title. You’ll move on. It’s rough getting a bad review, but not so bad when it’s just a fragment of your catalogue. And here’s an obvious secret – your writing gets better the more you write. Your next book will be better than your last. That’s how it works.

NUMBER 4 – Don’t Worry About Book Length

NaNoWrimo says a novel is 50,000 words. Publishing Houses like 80,000 words. Guess what? Many readers also like 20,000 word books. I’m one of them. So what if it’s not novel length? Paintings come in different sizes too. Don’t worry about norms. You may have to write to the length of how you plan to sell it. I self-publish so I don’t worry.

 NUMBER 3 – The Rewrite

There’s probably something missing from your book. You’ll know it by the time you get to the last chapter. It may feel daunting to do the rewrite, but it’s not so bad. Most of the writing is done. Get in there, put in the missing details, and make your work shine.

The rewrite is a big deal because when I first start writing, I would let myself get bogged down that I didn’t have a perfect book on the first pass. Don’t even bother sending it to your editor and proofreaders until you’ve done that first rewrite. You’ll be wasting everyone’s time. Don’t settle for that first pass “good enough”.

NUMBER 2 – Finish What You Start

So you are a writer, huh? How many works in progress do you have? I have a ton of WIP’s too, and eventually you have to settle on getting one of them done. You can have an entire harddrive full of unfinished works of stories that sounded great in your mind. They’ll never know greatness if you don’t do something about it.

 NUMBER 1 – BIC

BIC means Butt in Chair. Just write. You’ve seen the quotes – It’s that simple, and that hard. All of the other tips support this one. Find out what works for you and do it. Do whatever makes you write. There are a million distractions. Don’t look for excuses not to write, find excuses to write.

Monday Update Part 5

One year ago from yesterday, I released my first book, Broken Things. Since then, I’ve published two others, with my fourth book coming out within a few days.

Broken Things was the novel I wanted to write, a story that I felt was inspired. It is the novel I wanted to launch my career with. I’m still proud of it, even though my writing has continued to grow since then. It’s still my favorite of all my stories. It’s taken me across Southern Idaho to book signings in a variety of venues from an aquarium and to coffee bars and bookstores. It also continues to sell the best of my three titles, so far.
Broken ThingsEven though I am frequently asked if this book will ever have a sequel, I really don’t want to lessen the book by giving it a series. There’s some books (and movies) that lose everything they stand for because of further development, and this I will always believe is one of them. It has reached rank #1,138 in paid bestsellers on Amazon, and broken into the top #100 from a promo free run.

In this second year, I have another sci-fi novel coming out, probably a month or two away. It will be for those of you who enjoyed my first Sci-fi, with a story-line that will hopefully make you think and feel. More on that at a later date.

I will also be writing my other two genre fiction series, being Hungry Gods and Spilling Blood. I’ve promised my wife her advanced copy of Death’s Reach will be in her hands over the next couple of days, which means that you will be able to read it within a week.

In Death’s Reach, the zombie apocalypse takes a number of horrifying new turns as zombie gods begin to extend their influence over the world. There are few sanctuaries left, and the survivors from book 1 find their resolve tested as the world descends into chaos.

If you liked Death Storm, you’ll love Death’s Reach.

Monday Update – Part!!! 4!!!!

What time is it?! Monday!!! And what does that mean?! Monday Update!!! How are things going???

original
GREAT!!!!!!!

Yeah, so anyway, as you saw from the middle of the week, Death’s Reach is nearing completion. This week I’ll be revising and sending it off in manageable bites to my proofreaders.

In case you missed the cover and don’t want to scroll down to the previous post, here it is again:

deathsreachsmallish

That’s Death on the cover, btw. What’s Death up to in a world that’s undead? You’ll know soon enough.

As far as participating in Milwordy, word count is at 27,511 of 1,000,000. I need to be around 80k to be back on schedule for January by the end of the month. That’s a bit behind. Not worried yet though.

The next Monday update will reveal details about Spilling Blood Season II and other projects.

Now.. for number of releases. Remember, the plan is to publish 14 books in 2014. I have released 1 so far this year, under another pen name. Hey, that still counts. So that’s 1/14, with Death’s Reach going to be #2.

Monday Update 3 – Getting There Slowly

Dog Rides Tortoise
Last week’s productivity was slooooooooow…..

Thanks for checking back in with me. Last week was slow going, so not a lot to report. however, Death’s Reach is almost done, and I have a cover artist nearing completion. All my energy this week will be going into getting the book revised and finished.

As far as Milwordy goes, I need over 80,000 words by the end of this month, and I’ve yet to pass 30k, so I’ve let myself slip as I clean up these projects. I’ll leave it at that.

Unexpected Horse
Some weeks have unexpected interruptions…

Novels completed for 2014: 0/14. Changing that this week. 😉
